Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis. The son of a grain merchant and an amateur painter, Matisse did not discover his passion for art until many years later. In 1871, after the Franco-Prussian War, his family moved to Aisne, in northern France, where he grew up and worked as a clerk for a notary. It was at the age of 20 that he began painting.
