Marcel·la Barceló - If you'll believe in me, I'll believe in you

To coincide with Drawing Month (Mois du Dessin) in Paris, Galerie Dina Vierny unveils a collection of works on paper by Marcel·la Barceló. For this inaugural exhibition dedicated exclusively to this medium, the artist takes over Dina Vierny’s historic apartment within the Musée Maillol.

For the first time, these drawings are brought together and shown on their own, revealing their full coherence. Presented in Dina Vierny’s historic apartment—which she occupied from 1955 before it became the heart of the museum forty years later—the works are set within a space steeped in history. Here, they are not viewed from a distance; they are discovered up close, within an almost domestic intimacy.

Marcel·la Barceló’s drawings plunge the visitor into a universe that is simultaneously poetic and unsettling, where landmarks falter and images remain open-ended. Barceló does not simply invite us to an exhibition; she holds up a mirror and lets us decide whatwe see. Her work explores an uncertain zone between reality and the imaginary, never seeking to resolve the two, but rather allowing contradictions and presences to coexist.

The exhibition title, borrowed from Lewis Carroll (Through the Looking-Glass), seals a pact: “If you’ll believe in me, I’ll believe in you.” Like Alice facing the Unicorn, the visitor is invited to subvert their own logic. Here, reality reveals itself and slips away simultaneously.

Marcel·la Barceló works without preliminary sketches. Using pencil, watercolor, ink, or natural pigments, she allows forms to emerge and evolve through the movement of her hand. The images remain open and fluid, as if they continue to transform before our very eyes.

Her figures, often female, seem suspended between presence and disappearance. Bodies blend into landscapes, and contours dissolve. Some works evoke spirits or "doubles," inspired notably by Japanese culture, where the visible and the invisible coexist.

Produced over the last five years, these drawings form a free-flowing collection without a linear narrative. They respond to one another through echoes, like fragments of a private journal.

Presented in an intimate setting, this exhibition offers a sensitive and immersive experience. It invites us to slow down, to observe differently, and perhaps to accept believing—if only for a moment—in that which eludes us.
