Jean Degottex was born in 1918 in Sathonay, near Lyon. A self-taught artist, he began painting around 1939 during a stay in North Africa. Upon returning to France, he exhibited in Paris from 1941 works close to Lyrical Abstraction, an early commitment that earned him the Kandinsky Prize in 1951. By the late 1940s, Degottex moved away from figuration to engage in an abstraction nourished both by his experience of the world and by encounters with writers and thinkers.
