Séraphine – Catalogue raisonné of painted works
Pierre Guénégan, director of several art galleries, collector, expert at the Paris Court of Appeal for thirty-five years, consultant to French Customs, has worked for many years on self-taught and solitary painters. After several catalogues raisonnés including one on René Rimbert, emblematic and respected figure of these artists often on the margins of the art market, it is the catalogue raisonné of Séraphine Louis that he presents to us today. The letters of the artist interned for ten years in the asylum of Clermont de l'Oise are published for the first time in this book conceived above all as a tribute to this great artist.
The role of Wilhelm Uhde, a German art dealer, as he presented himself, is also analyzed, in particular his true influence on painting but also on the life of Séraphine Louis. This book includes numerous analyses by various authors, very different from each other, art historians, but also psychiatrists and psychoanalysts. Some, such as Maryline Clin or Marie-Amélie Ortas-Peretti, have devoted a significant part of their lives to studying the painting and the deep motivations of Séraphine, a small peasant girl born in the village of Arsy, then a humble servant who was not predestined to painting.
A little more than a hundred works have been identified out of the four hundred probably painted by Séraphine Louis. Others, unlisted, still remain in attics and we hope that this book will contribute to the discovery of new masterpieces. Whatever the case, she will forever remain: Séraphine Louis-Maillard, without rival!...
