Dina Vierny - Histoire de ma vie racontée à Alain Jaubert

21 x 16 cm
Soft cover
2009

Model and inspiration to Maillol, resistance fighter, collector and gallery owner, Dina Vierny's determination, enthusiasm and freedom turned her life into a veritable novel. Born in 1919 near Odessa, Dina emigrated to France, where her parents rubbed shoulders with the Russian intelligentsia in Paris. The year she turned sixteen, a friend pointed out her resemblance to the sculptures of Maillol, who invited her to his studio in Marly-le-Roi. There she met Van Dongen, Vuillard, Le Corbusier, Gide, Valéry, Bonnard and Matisse.

In 1940, Dina was in Banyuls-sur-Mer, where she posed for Maillol. She frequented Marseille, where André Breton and his friends had taken refuge. She took part in emigration networks for European anti-fascists. Arrested in Paris in 1943 by the Gestapo, she was rescued by Maillol, who brought in Arno Breker, the official sculptor of the Third Reich. With Matisse's support, Dina opened a gallery in 1947. She organized Poliakoff's first exhibitions, and also showed Dufy, Kandinsky, Laurens, Picasso...

In 1964, Dina offered the French State 18 monumental sculptures by Maillol, which André Malraux, Minister of Culture, had placed in the Tuileries gardens. In 1995, she finally inaugurated the Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol.
