A masterpiece by Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), "La Nuit" paves the way for a revival of sculpture through the lens of archaic Greek statuary.
"La Nuit" (created between 1902 and 1908) fits within a cube, but is more massive in form than "La Méditerranée". Symbolizing rest and serenity, it is folded into itself, the face hidden between its arms, which are resting on its raised knees.
