ABOUT

Seventy-eight years after the inauguration of its historic space on rue Jacob, Galerie Dina Vierny is delighted to announce the opening of a second location, just a few streets away at 53 rue de Seine. To celebrate this event, an exhibition devoted to the Hungarian artist Judit Reigl will be presented simultaneously on both sites from 16 May 2025.

Judit Reigl - Retrospective
53 rue de Seine / from May 16 to June 14
36 rue Jacob / from May 16 to August 2

Biography
Judit Reigl was a surrealist, abstract and figurative painter. When she arrived in France in 1950, she met Simon Hantaï, who had also come from Budapest, and who introduced her to André Breton. Seduced by her Surrealist paintings, he invited her to exhibit at L'Étoile scellée. She then moved away from Surrealism and produced series marked by intense gesturality: "Éclatements" (1955-1958), "Centres de dominance" (1958-1959) and "Écritures en masse" (1959-1965). At the same time, unsuccessful canvases were kept on the studio floor and trodden over, covered in pictorial excrement and then reworked: these were the "Guano" (1958-1965). More than the formal elegance of the gesture, it was its authenticity that Judit Reigl sought. In 1965-66, figuration gradually reappeared in the form of male torsos, the "Hommes" series (1965-1972). Between 1973 and 1985, she created the "Déroulements" (1973-1985), abstract canvases in which the artist developed an automatic writing style made up of coloured lines emerging through transparency on the reverse side of the canvas. The human figure then settled in definitively in her last series: "Face à" (1988-1989), "Hors" (1990-1994), "Hors" (1994-1999) and "New York, 11 septembre 2001" (2001-2002). Reigl always draws on the most profound experiences of his life to develop a vast and complex reflection on the human being. In search of essence and the absolute, her work bears witness to the unknown.

Judit Reigl's work can be seen in the following museums: MoMA, New York ; Guggenheim Museum, New York ; The Metropolitain Museum of Art, New York ; Centre Pompidou, Paris ; Musée d'Art moderne de la ville de Paris ; Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol, Paris ; MAC VAL, Vitry-sur-Seine ; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Caen ; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Grenoble ; Musée Fabre, Montpellier; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes; Arsenal, musée d'art contemporain, Soissons; Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Tate Modern, London; The Albertina Museum, Vienna; Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest.
