« Die Farbe hat mich »

De Stéphane Bordarier | 09.2026

In 2000, I took part in the exhibition Die Farbe hat mich (“Colour has taken hold of me”) at the Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum in Hagen, Germany, which continued in 2003 in New York under the title Seeing Red. Klee’s statement sums up perfectly what colour means to a painter. For me, the only thing that ultimately makes a painting work is its colour—and that is always very mysterious. The ...

Pierre Wat is sometimes surprised by the juxtapositions that arise: ‘If someone had told me that one day I’d place an Auguste Chabaud next to a David Hockney, I wouldn’t have believed them! The juxtaposition of the Soutine [Landscape (c. 1922–1923)] with the [Charles] Pollock [Untitled (Post-Rome), green (1964)] is incredible, but I only realised it after I’d hung them. And I had no idea that one day Edward Munch’s ...

October in Paris is contemporary art season, a tradition. Galleries from around the world arrive with their collections of more or less innovative works, all for sale. This summer, the restored Grand Palais was one of the most admired and notable venues during the Olympic Games. The contemporary art fair, Art Basel Paris—formerly known as Fiac—will take place there from October 18 to 20. It marks a return to the heart ...

BRAFA, a fair that makes a good impression

De Alexandre Crochet | 16-02-2023

Despite notable absences, the Belgian art and antiques fair managed to preserve diversity and quality, with many sales falling within the mid-market range. Despite some hesitation for significant purchases in this uncertain early part of the year, a trend also observed at artgenève for contemporary art, BRAFA once again managed to stand out. It recorded numerous transactions in its main niche: the mid-market. "After coming last year with too large pieces, ...

Modern and contemporary art in the spotlight. For its second participation, the Parisian gallery Dina Vierny sold, in a range from 5,000 to 300,000 euros, one-third of its booth, including an Ève à la pomme by Aristide Maillol (cast during the artist's lifetime and previously owned by Raoul Dufy), a monumental bronze from 1996 by Robert Couturier, two works by Michel Haas, whose gallery aims to reintroduce his work, and ...

The fair is beautiful, but it lacks a bit of museum-worthy artworks. The Tefaf Maastricht is in a month, so dealers have kept their finest pieces, noted a market expert. Nevertheless, exhibitors were all satisfied with the level of transactions, which generally stayed below 400,000 euros, even though most of the significant pieces, as there were a few after all, remained unsold. Notably in 20th-century art, at Bailly Gallery, there ...

In the cave of the painter Michel Haas

De Sabrina Testa |

One of those improbable and magical places that often hide behind the facades of buildings in Marseille. In 2018, the artist Michel Haas and his partner Narimane Mari, a filmmaker, took up residence in the 300 m³ space on the ground floor and first floor of a building on Châteauredon Street in Noailles, after leaving Paris. "We bought this place together, and Michel continued his work here until his death ...

"Their reserve barely conceals a keen ambition for prestigious institutions. At 25 and 27 years old, the grandsons of the post-war art dealer, muse of Maillol, are taking over the direction of the oldest gallery in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Démarrage euphorique pour Art Basel Paris

De Roxana Azimi et Harry Bellet | 17-10-2024 |

REPORT | The art fair, held until Sunday in the renovated Grand Palais, attracts collectors from around the world. "Our grandmothers used to say, ‘Better to inspire envy than pity,’ and as everyone knows, they were always right." After years of typically French masochism, Paris is regaining its place on the international art scene thanks to a combination of factors: favorable tax policies that now make France the gateway for imports ...
