For Gilioli’s 9th solo exhibition at Galerie Dina Vierny, all aspects of the artist’s work will be highlighted (stone and bronze sculpture, drawing, collage, gouache and tapestry). A key figure in post-war abstraction, Gilioli was at the origin of a work “oscillating between the rigor of the sign and the sensuality of forms where angle and curve meet” (Michel Ragon, « Gilioli » in L’Œil, n°16, 1965, p. 28).

Although somewhat forgotten in recent years, Gilioli was nonetheless one of the main representatives of French post-war sculpture, evolving in non-figurative art alongside Vasarely, Poliakoff, Dewasne or Deyrolle. The Galerie Dina Vierny is therefore happy to invite the public to rediscover the work of this artist.

Born in 1911 and died in 1977, Gilioli remains famous today for its impressive National Monument to the Resistance, inaugurated in 1973 by André Malraux, which sits majestically on the Glières plateau. He is also remembered as the artist who carried out the enlargement of the Cheval Majeur by Duchamp-Villon, at the request of his brother Marcel in 1966.

Gilioli’s sculptures rise up in space like real architecture and express a strong spatial dynamic through their sober and pure silhouette, which can also be found in his graphic work. His works do not include any mathematically determined volume, but on the contrary they result from a focus of the eye and the mind of which the hand is the instrument.

Mainly known for his sculpture, Gilioli was also a prolific artist in other fields, ranging from drawing to painting and tapestry of which he produced more than fifty models.
