ABOUT

The Dina Vierny Gallery invites you to end the year with "la peur au ventre." Olivier Lorquin and Luc Bellier have selected drawings, paintings, and photographs on the theme of fear, a feeling explored in various aspects from the 17th to the 21st centuries.

Between the fear of oneself and the other, the Dina Vierny Gallery presents 11 works.

Among the classic works, there is a self-portrait by Rembrandt (1626) looking at us with astonishment, an enchanting Neapolitan vanitas dated around 1650, and a portrait of a man (circa 1685) with an enigmatic smile by Jan Tilius.

For the modern art period, two famous engravings by James Ensor, including "La mort chassant le troupeau des humains" (1898), present an apocalyptic and satirical scene.

In contemporary art, represented by paintings and photographs, are artists rarely exhibited in France. These include the Caravaggesque work of Vincent Desiderio, "Study for a Hero's Life" (1989), featuring a terrified man about to be immolated, and American Joe Coleman, who addresses a horrific true crime story with a comic book style in the painting "Gertie" (2008). An intense small-format self-portrait "Le cri" (2017) by Ra'anan Levy amplifies the pain emanating from it.

Photographers Andres Serrano, Philip Lorca diCorcia, and Anthony Goicolea present series focused on American society. "Heads #1" (2000) by Philip Lorca diCorcia captures the anxious gaze of a solitary man crossing a New York street in Times Square. In a provocative approach, Andres Serrano created a series (1990) of portraits of Ku Klux Klan members reflecting racial hatred and violence.
