ABOUT

In the 1950s, Racoff was not the only Parisian painter of Russian origin, but if Lanskoy, Poliakoff and de Staël were names that instantly evoked a fundamentally abstract Ecole de Paris, Racoff's was the harbinger of a revival of primitive painting.

Racoff came to painting at a very early age, at a painful time when his family was fleeing the revolution. Born in St Petersburg in 1904, he grew up in the Siberian town of Tomsk, which he and his family were to leave in 1918 to embark on the long exodus that would take him personally to France via China. Near the Chinese border, still in Russia, a theatre decorator introduced him to painting. When his family moved to Kharbin in China, Racoff studied law and painting, which, alongside Russian icons, revealed to him the existence of primitive European painting by the Italians, Flemish, Germans and French. From then on, his destiny as a painter was fixed.

In the 1920s, the artist arrived in France, attracted like so many others by Paris. Life in the capital was tough for unknown artists. Not without difficulty, Racoff found a job. He became an illustrator and later a picture framer. At the same time, the refugee was becoming a Parisian. His walks taught him to love the city that had almost devoured him, and he immersed himself passionately in the history of its past. During this period, he compiled a considerable amount of documentation on Old Paris, which was the pride of of his library.

In 1946, at last, a Parisian gallery, the Galerie Vendôme, gave him a chance: it was a success. Encouraged, the artist devoted himself exclusively to painting, and in 1952 his first exhibition at Dina Vierny was a resounding success, selling out in a matter of days. Not long before, the artist still doubted his possibilities: Dina Vierny sometimes recounted that, in the early days of her relationship with him, he hardly dared to enter the gallery when he brought one or two canvases that he had entrusted to her for sale. His success grew. However, the man remained true to himself. His character was always in perfect harmony with his painting and the poetic world it expressed.

Racoff works very slowly, with a precision that evokes the painting of Jules Lefranc, his friend and protector. His style allows him to use his meticulous technique to treat the architecture of his subjects.
He painted the streets of Paris, the houses and buildings that he deliberately left uninhabited. His quays along the Seine are tinged with the blue greyness of their cold winter dampness, but without vain despair. These are the memories of a walker, full of tenderness for things inventoried in their smallest details, stones, trees or lampposts. His urban landscapes exude a poetic and mysterious quality.

Racoff uses the same technical precision in his still lifes and trompe-l'œil, his other favourite themes. He paints, with rare delicacy, small details such as dewdrops or multicoloured insects. His perspectives sometimes give the painting a surreal air.

Racoff's works, which combine the strange with the poetic, stand apart in naive art and deserve to be rediscovered.
