ABOUT

The Dina Vierny Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition "Vladimir Yankilevsky – Spaces of Passions" from November 21, 2015, to January 22, 2016.

Dina Vierny and Vladimir Yankilevsky met one January evening in 1970 in Moscow. The artist was first introduced at the Dina Vierny Gallery during the Russian Avant-garde exhibition - Moscow 73, after which three solo exhibitions were dedicated to him in 1992, 1997, and 2001. This exhibition, "Vladimir Yankilevsky - Spaces of Passions," presents works from the artist's "New York" period (1989 - 1992). They were all acquired by Dina Vierny and her son Olivier Lorquin during their visit to the studio in 1990, and therefore constitute a logical and coherent ensemble. Yankilevsky's Spaces of Passions are "images of life against the backdrop of the universe": they are essential in the artist's work because their discreet presence is found in each of his works. They express the idea of a world where harmony reigns. Inside are arranged abstract, imaginary figures that collide and construct a play of strength. More than a formal vocabulary, they constitute a kind of topography, a geometric partition where each element imitates a human force. Like in Paul Klee's work, this universe of imaginary forms awakens multiple associations. But with Yankilevsky, these elements first express an energy or an idea that refers to the constitutive tense relationship between male and female nature. These abstract forms are each time separated by a line, thus forming a continuous horizon connecting all the works into a harmonious whole. This infinite line translates for the artist an existential principle, a concept of life. This is the expression of a flow of universal energy that divides the work and defines a space of tension.

In these abstract landscapes, Vladimir Yankilevsky formulates the values that inhabit him: for him, life is based on tension, on conflicts between the sexes, between society and energies. In these Spaces of Passions, he seeks to define the very essence of the relationship between man and the universe. Each work can therefore be conceived as a microcosm that tends to express the mystery of life. The exhibition also presents a set of Meissen and Höchst porcelain (Germany) made between 2008 and 2012 on the theme of "Aphrodite's Psychoanalysis."
