Dina Vierny dedicated an exhibition to René Rimbert from November 22, 1983, to January 25, 1984.

"RIMBERT is a naïve painter whom I have the pleasure of watching paint. If Bauchant had a mischievous smile, Bombois a greedy lip, and Racoff a dreamy gaze, Rimbert, for his part, has a smile that expresses kindness. With his face adorned by a red chechia, he looks as if he has stepped straight out of a painting by the Douanier Rousseau.

A painter of enclosed walls and closed doors, his architectures surround a cherished place that must be protected at all costs. Through his evocative painting, created with small, precise strokes, he symbolizes tranquility, inner peace, and dreams.

One wishes to enter his houses, imagined as orderly as in the mind of Vermeer, to open the doors and windows to uncover their secrets. To unlock the dream. He is a slender, delicate man, full of spirit. Time has no hold on this remarkable memory.

I express the desire to hear him speak—he talks, he recounts his stories willingly, and here is what he says.

My father worked for a framer on Boulevard du Montparnasse, which still exists today. Harpignies used to come there to have his works framed. As a child, my father took me to the Salon; at home, paintings were everywhere. The two rooms my family lived in were adorned with paintings. Even in the lavatory, there was a small transom window, and my father had fun painting the Loiret on it. When the sunlight streamed through the window, as I buttoned my little shorts, I admired a river, a boat, and colors that changed with the light.

My father had a large mirror, for which he made a very flat frame himself, 15 cm wide. Every evening after dinner, he painted flowers that intertwined, forming a garland around the frame."

René RIMBERT

Born in Paris, Rimbert was introduced to painting and music very early on. In 1908 he started working for PTT (Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones) where he stayed until 1955. Rimbert began painting after the first World War, encouraged by Marcel Gromaire and Max Jacob, who organised his first exhibitions before he met Wihelm Uhde. He was also supported by Picasso who admired his work and introduced him to Le Douanier...
